01-Shan Yu Jian (Mountain Dialogue Space), Pan/Chang Residence, Beijing, 1998

The design of this country house begins with the desire of minimum disruption of the existing terraced farmland and maximum interaction with the surrounding mountain and water or landscape. The initial intention concretizes into a big roof, which is supported on a steel frame and floats over the site as the conceptual reconstruction of hillside. Underneath it, urbanity is translated into interior landscape where a continuous living space is divided into several areas by box-walls/mini-buildings, echoing Louis Kahn’s city house comparison. Meanwhile, the natural scenery on the outside is invited in through large areas of glazing on all sides of the villa. The three attic-guestrooms poking through the roof gives away the spatial structure on the inside and present themselves as three detached houses on a slope.

Il progetto di questa casa di campagna origina dall’intenzione di alterare il meno possibile l’esistente terrazzamento agricolo e dalla volontà di mantenere una forte interazione con il paesaggio circostante fatto di acqua e montagna. L’intenzione iniziale ha trovato concretizzazione in un ampio tetto sostenuto da una struttura in acciaio, ricostruzione ideale del concetto di pendio. Al di sotto la dimensione urbana è trasportata in un paesaggio interiore occupato da uno spazio a giorno continuo diviso in zone differenti da blocchi cavi in mattoni che richiamano il rapporto casa - città di Louis Kahn. Mentre lo scenario naturale all’esterno è attirato verso l’interno dalle ampie vetrate che circondano la villa. Le tre stanze per gli ospiti sull’attico sporgono dal tetto rompendo la struttura spaziale, come tre casette isolate su un pendio.

02-Peking University (Qingdao) International Conference Center, Qingdao, 2001

The site is a steep slope on the oceanfront where the elevation drops 20 some meters from the access road to the water. Such topography inspires an architecture that participates in the landscape as a transition and offers an experience of descending to the sea. The building form thus takes on a linear sequence of interior and exterior platforms and staircases. Five existing villas are remodeled to become the hotel component of the center. The roofs of the villas are made accessible therefore constitute other levels of the topographical formation.

Il sito è in ripida pendenza sull’oceano, con un’altezza che aumenta di 20 metri dal piano stradale allo strapiombo sull’acqua. Un tale assetto topografico ispira un’architettura che diventa parte del paesaggio come momento di transizione, offrendo una magnifica visione del mare dall’alto. L’edificio si sviluppa secondo una sequenza lineare di piattaforme e vani scala interni ed esterni. Cinque case preesistenti sono trasformate in ostelli che servono il centro in costruzione. Le coperture delle case sono rese accessibili fornendo ulteriori livelli al complesso topografico.

03-Split House, Yanqing, Beijing, 2002

Located in the mountains of northern Beijing by the Great Wall, the house is “split”, right in the middle, to bring in the scenery. A courtyard, or outdoor living area, is enclosed by the mountains on one side and the house, with its two split halves, on the other. The line between the natural landscape and manmade architecture is thus blurred. The split house is a flexible prototype: The angle between the two halves can be adjusted to fit the house onto various hill sites. The split house is ecological: Its frame structure is made of laminated wood with rammed earth walls, which is well insulated with minimum environmental impact.

Situata fra le montagne a nord del Beijing presso la Grande Muraglia, la casa è “spaccata”, proprio nel mezzo, all’interno del vasto scenario. Una corte, o meglio, un soggiorno all’aperto, è circondato dalle montagne da una parte, e dalla casa, con le sue due metà, dall’altra. La linea fra il paesaggio naturale e l’architettura finisce per confondersi. La casa spaccata è un prototipo flessibile: l’angolo fra le due metà può essere modificato per adattare la casa ai più svariati siti. La casa spaccata è ecologica: la sua struttura è in legno laminato con pareti direttamente inserite nel terreno, ben isolata e dall’impatto ambientale ridotto al minimo.

05-Urbanizing Bamboo, Installation, Bangkok, 1999

This is a proposed urban project to repair the damaged ecology and, furthermore, an attempt to create a symbiosis between ecological system and contemporary urban life. Taking advantage of bamboo’s systematic growth, we suggest the installation of a bamboo line as a component of the city infrastructure to provide a city with a continuous network of plant. With stems and a nutrition fluid inside, the bamboo line may reach through streets every single building in town and can go onto its elevations and rooftop. On the way, the plant acts as the sun shade, the air purifier, and the humidifier. Bamboo itself makes a live curtain wall. While the design takes on live bamboo as the main building material, we incorporate dried bamboo structures, details and techniques from not only traditional construction but also basket weaving.

Si tratta di una proposta di progetto urbano volto a far fronte al degrado ecologico oltre che del tentativo di creare una sorta di simbiosi fra l’ecosistema e lo stile di vita urbana contemporanea. Traendo ispirazione dalla continua crescita del bamboo, proponiamo l’installazione di una cortina di bamboo quale componente delle infrastrutture urbane, che fornisce alla città una rete continua di piantumazioni. Con i suoi steli irrorati da una sostanza nutritiva, la cortina di bamboo può raggiungere attraverso le strade ogni edificio arrivando fino al tetto. Così le piante fungono da schermatura solare, purificatori d’aria e umidificatori. Il bamboo rappresenta una curtain wall vivente. Acquisendo il bamboo quale materiale costruttivo principale, abbiamo derivato le strutture, I dettagli e le tecniche relative alla sua lavorazione dalle tradizionali tecniche costruttive e di fabbricazione dei cestini.
