Planned Conservation of XX Century Architectural Heritage

30 - 31 ottobre 2009, Como
Planned Conser vat ion i s the capability of seeing Cultural Heritage within the process of time and managing i ts t ransformat ions. Through knowledge, prevention, control and interventions planning, the progressive idea of conservation as co-evolution between heritage and mankind goes over the defensive idea of restoration -as keeping heritage in a supposed original state-. Planned and Preventive Conservation practices are a strategic step to preserve 20th century architectural heritage. Modern heritage is particularly exposed to expedited decay due to its material, technological and formal features, and therefore it finds in control and care the most effective means to preserve its authenticity. Reflections on legislative frameworks, on social and cultural impacts, on energetic and economic sustainability, on the role of knowledge, diagnostics and monitoring, highlight potentials linked to the passage from restoration as an exceptional event and conservation as knowledge and constant care. Como City Council is the owner and manager of several important monuments of Modern Architecture. The Council is setting up innovative practices for their planned conservation and their enhancement with the contribution of Fondazione Cariplo, in the framework of the project ‘Innovative Technologies for Planned Conservation of Built Cultural Heritage’. The conference is part of this project and has been organized with DOCOMOMO Italia - Italian Chapter of International Committee for Documentation and Conservation of Building, Sites and Neighborhoods of the Modern Movement -, Politecnico di Milano - Building & Environment Science & Technology Department, and UNESCO Chair on Preventive Conservation Maintenance and Monitoring of Monuments and Sites. Conference’s presentations, posters and discussions highlight international researches, policies and practices necessary for an effective conservation of 20th century architectural heritage. It is possible to outline a scenario that reveals different cultural contexts of protection and unseen lines of continuity and agreement.
